The compressed/uncompressed (C/U) bit comes next, moving from right to left This bit provides the decompression protection needed so that compressed and uncompressed frames can be mixed on the same DLCI while still using the FRF9 frame format If the C/U bit is set to a 1 bit, then the data inside the frame has been compressed If the C/U bit is set to a 0 bit, then the data inside the frame has not been compressed and an attempt by the receiving process to apply some decompression rules will lead to errors The C/U bit is a nice way of allowing the application processes above the FRF9 process to communicate in normal, uncompressed mode without having to turn the FRF9 processes completely off at each end of the virtual circuit.
